Our remote and rugged coastline still bears the scars of its’ torrid past with a number of castle ruins standing guard across the Pentland Firth – interspersed with castles which have survived the Vikings and bitter clan rivalries and dastardly deeds. Step back in time, and hear the tales of the local clan struggles and of life at the top end.

Highlights
- The journey will follow the Pentland Firth along the top coastline in Britain, taking us through areas with a strong Viking past, and through the strongholds of Clan Sinclair, the Earls of Caithness.
- Enjoy the rugged rural areas and former coastal fishing villages.
- We meander through country lanes to Dunnet Head, and stand on the ‘most northerly point’ on mainland Britain looking toward Orkney!
- During the migration and breeding seasons the cliffs are home to thousands of chattering, busy sea birds including cheeky puffins!
- Visit the beautful Castle of Mey and Gardens, restored by the former Queen Mother. Enjoy a fine lunch at their Visitors’ Centre.
- Then off to John o’Groats with its’ delightful mecca of cafes, coffee shops and tourist outlets, and the ever popular ‘Journeys End’ signpost. Another must for photographers.
- The views from a circa 2,000 year old iron age broch out across the dramatic rocky coastal cliffs over Nybster,
- The ruinous Sinclair Girnigoe Castle sits precariously on the dramatic clifftops guarding the volatile Pentland Firth and Sinclair Bay near Wick – meanwhile, carefully guarding its’ gruesome secrets.
- Return through the stunning highland landscape along the dramatic coastline, to your hotel/ship.

- Scrabster, Thurso, Mey, Gills Bay, John o’Groats or Wick or surrounding area – to be agreed when booking.
- Scrabster cruise ship passengers, and Gills Bay and John o’Groats Ferry passengers are met at the harbour entrances just a short walk from the gangway and parking/coach area
